Kashmiri Kahwa: The Ancient Saffron Tea That's Taking Delhi by Storm

by Shikha Puri 18 Apr 2026 0 Comments
Kashmiri Kahwa; Kashmiri Tea, Kashmiri Kehwa

If you have ever attended a Kashmiri banquet, sat by a fire in Srinagar in the winter, or been welcomed into a traditional Kashmiri home, you will remember the first sip. Pale gold, fragrant with saffron and cardamom, layered with the warmth of cinnamon and the richness of crushed almonds — Kashmiri Kahwa is not just a tea. It is an experience that has been passed down through generations for over a thousand years.

Delhi NCR is waking up to this extraordinary brew in 2026. As premium tea culture grows across Gurgaon, South Delhi, and Noida, Kahwa has crossed over from being a specialty item at Kashmir restaurants to becoming a sought-after daily wellness ritual and a favourite gift for discerning buyers.

What Exactly is Kashmiri Kahwa?

Kahwa — sometimes spelled Qahwa or Kehwa — is a traditional Kashmiri green tea preparation. The base is a whole-leaf green tea, typically from the Kangra valley or blended with Green Tea from Darjeeling, which is then brewed with a spice blend that traditionally includes:

  • Whole green cardamom pods — for their intensely aromatic, eucalyptus-forward oils
  • Ceylon or Kashmiri cinnamon sticks — warming, sweet, and anti-inflammatory
  • Whole cloves — small in quantity but essential for depth
  • Saffron strands — Kashmir's most precious spice, giving the brew its signature golden hue
  • Crushed almonds or walnuts — added to the cup at serving, creating richness and texture
  • Rose petals — in the finest preparations, dried rose petals are added for a floral lift

The result is a brew that sits entirely outside the Western conception of tea. It is not brewed in a teapot and poured into a mug. Traditionally, Kahwa is prepared in a samovar — a Russian-influenced brass or copper vessel that the Kashmiris adopted and made their own over centuries.

The Health Benefits of Kashmiri Kahwa

Kahwa has been used in Kashmiri traditional medicine and Unani practice for centuries. Modern research is now beginning to validate what Kashmiri households have always known. The benefits are a product of its ingredients working in concert:

Saffron — The Golden Thread of Wellness

Saffron contains safranal, crocin, and picrocrocin — compounds that have been studied for their anti-depressant, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Even in the small quantities used in Kahwa, saffron contributes to mood regulation and provides one of the most distinctive antioxidant profiles of any spice. Saffron supports cognitive function and is traditionally used in Kashmiri communities during winter to ward off seasonal low moods.

Green Tea Base — Polyphenols and Catechins

The green tea base in Kahwa delivers EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), the most studied tea catechin in the world. It supports metabolic function, aids weight management when consumed as part of a balanced diet, and delivers antioxidants that help neutralise free radicals. Because Kahwa uses a lightly oxidised green tea base — not fermented — these catechins are preserved at their maximum concentration.

Cardamom and Cinnamon — Digestive Allies

Both cardamom and cinnamon have well-established carminative properties — they ease bloating, support digestion, and reduce gastric discomfort. This is why Kahwa is traditionally served after meals in Kashmiri culture. The combination of these spices with the green tea base makes Kahwa one of the most effective post-meal digestive teas available.

Almonds — Protein and Healthy Fats

The addition of crushed almonds to the cup is not merely decorative. Almonds provide vitamin E, magnesium, and healthy monounsaturated fats, turning Kahwa from a simple tea into a genuinely nourishing drink — particularly in the cold months when the body needs sustained energy.

How to Brew Kashmiri Kahwa at Home

Our Tea Masters at TeaCupsFull recommend the following method for the best cup:

Step 1

Add 300ml of cold water to a small saucepan. Add 2–3 cardamom pods (lightly crushed), 1 small cinnamon stick, and 2 cloves.

Step 2

Bring to a gentle simmer and allow the spices to infuse for 3 minutes.

Step 3

Reduce heat to low. Add 1 heaped teaspoon of Kashmiri Kahwa blend (or quality Kangra green tea). Do not allow to boil.

Step 4

Steep for 3–4 minutes. The water should be at approximately 85°C — if it is boiling, remove from heat for 30 seconds before adding tea.

Step 5

Add 3–5 saffron strands and allow to steep for a further 1 minute. The liquid will turn a delicate gold.

Step 6

Strain into a cup. Add 4–5 crushed almond slivers directly to the cup. Finish with a single dried rose petal if available.

Step 7

Do not add milk. Kahwa is traditionally served plain, sometimes with a small drizzle of raw honey.

Kashmiri Kahwa as a Gift

Few teas make as striking a gift as Kahwa. The combination of saffron's golden lustre, the exoticism of the spice blend, and the inherent cultural story of Kashmir means that a beautifully presented Kahwa gift set communicates thought and quality instantly. At TeaCupsFull, our Kashmiri Kahwa is available as a standalone pouch and as part of our curated wellness and gifting collections.

It is a particularly popular choice for gifting to wellness-conscious recipients, Ayurveda enthusiasts, or anyone who appreciates the intersection of Indian culinary heritage and health. What did our Kashmiri friends and Tea Tasters say about our Kashmiri Kahwa

We were planning our range of teas, Kasmiri Kahwa was one of the blends. I decided to reach out to a childhood friend, a native from Kashmir. Our parents were colleagues in Duncans and we went to the same school in Darjeeling. In fact both of us went on to join the tea industry as Tea Tasters.

Our benchmark was simple, our Kashmiri Kahwa should taste as good as the local brands which we had initially tasted, we wanted to be dead sure that our blend is as authentic as possible.

I made a table blend and got it tasted by him, he gave me a thumbs up. We reached out to all colleagues from Kashmir and  sent them samples of our blend to taste, we received feedback that the Kashmiri Kahwa was similar in taste to what they make in their homes. We got an endorsement from people who actually mattered, Kashmiri local folks, that’s how we introduced our blend of Saffron Kashmiri Kahwa!

Crafted using fresh green tea leaves blended with aromatic Indian spices like cardamom, cinnamon, cloves and saffron. Each spice has its aromatic profile and adds to the spiced tea, we make small batches for freshness personally blended by our master tea blender and tea taster.

Q: Is Kashmiri Kahwa caffeinated?

A: Yes, but moderately. Because the base is green tea rather than black tea, the caffeine level is lower than a standard cup of Assam or English Breakfast. A cup of Kahwa typically contains 25–40mg of caffeine — roughly half that of a cup of coffee.

Q: Can I drink Kashmiri Kahwa every day?

A: Yes. Kahwa is gentle enough for daily consumption. Many of our customers in Gurgaon have made it their morning wellness ritual. We recommend limiting it to 2–3 cups per day given the caffeine content of the green tea base.

Q: Where can I buy authentic Kashmiri Kahwa in Gurgaon?

A: TeaCupsFull stocks a curated Kashmiri Kahwa blend at both our DLF Phase 1 and DLF Summit Plaza (DLF5) stores. You can also order online at teacupsfull.com with delivery across Delhi NCR.

Q: Does Kashmiri Kahwa contain saffron?

A: Yes. Authentic Kashmiri Kahwa includes genuine Kashmiri saffron strands. The saffron is a defining ingredient — both for its flavour and its health properties. Our blend uses real saffron, not artificial colouring.
